Nova Scotia welcomes its first Gastropub, The Port
The Port Gastropub opens this week in Port Williams.
Built from the ground up on a spectacular site overlooking the Cornwallis River and enjoying a dramatic site to view the tides of the Bay of Fundy, The Port is a collaborative community investment spearheaded by a group of local residents who wanted to help revitalize the growing village of Port Williams.
Over 40 community shareholders have contributed to the construction and opening of The Port. The Port is a 100-seat restaurant, with a pub section, a dining area and a private room available for parties, meetings and functions. "Gastropub" is a British term for a public house (pub) that specializes in high quality food.
Chef Michael Howell of Tempest Restaurant has been engaged over the last two years in the design, construction and opening of the pub and its "beer cuisine" focused menu. He will continue as executive consulting chef. The business will purchase as much local product as possible in an effort to minimize "food kilometers" and support the principles of slow-food. Menu items include typical pub fare as well as local grass-fed beef in the Steak and Ale Pie, local lamb in the Lamb Burger and Tabbouleh Salad, local cheddar cheese in the Porter and Cheddar Soup and Indian Point Mussels in the South Shore Mussels steamed in Amber Ale. Daily feature items focus on seasonal, local product and weekly specials will also be included on the menu.
The craft brews are supplied by the on-site microbrewery, Sea Level Brewing, owned by brewmaster Randy Lawrence, with past experience at Paddy's Pub in Kentville, Rudders Pub in Yarmouth and Propeller in Halifax. Randy will supply a minimum of five craft-brewed beers at all times and a monthly feature brew. Randy's ingredients will also be sourced locally whenever possible.
